Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm - PS3 - GR Review

What kind of ninja dresses like a road cone?

I've always found something fundamentally wrong with games like Street Fighter and Soul Calibur (despite my love for them). You can spend your entire life mastering all the moves and subtle nuances of a given character, only to lose to an eight-year-old mashing buttons; and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm is a welcome departure from that, as mashing buttons is really all there is to it.

[image1]Now I'm not one of those rabid, headband-wearing Naruto fans, scarfing down Pocky with one hand and shaking my fist in rue at the roundness of my eyes with the other. But I do like the series [Minus 418 points. ~Ed.]. It has a deep and engrossing plot, an enormous cast of (literally) colorful characters, and a ninja that turns into a giant badger made of sand. However, like any successful show, comic, or movie, the Naruto series suffers from a number of crappy, licensed game tie-ins; and as such, I was worried that Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm would bring home the gold at the Winter Olympics of Suck. However, it's not that bad. Not actually good, mind you, so it still gets a ribbon for participation.

Impatience. That’s why traditional turn-based JRPGs are dying. People, and by that I mean most “gamers”, don’t seem to have any time anymore. If twenty seconds goes by without something exploding, someone or something being slashed/punched/shotgunned/teabagged, or some part of the screen spinning into a kaleidoscopic vortex of Technicolor accompanied by a swirl of Dolby Digital surround sound… they get bored. So it’s no wonder that both western and eastern RPGs are becoming “action RPGs" which, though generally getting the best of both worlds, have seemingly abandoned their roots.

The game offers a whole new level of combat system wherein you can perform chain attack combinations paired up with humorous skills that are easy to learn but difficult to master. Community functions such as guilds, parties, marriage system and a lot more will encourage interaction between players. You can also acquire different pets that can be used as mounts or battle assistants and have your own house which you can furnish and decorate. A crafting system will also be available to all 4 character classes which will further evolve into more than 28 different classes. Nominated as “The most anticipated game” by Gamespot Korea after the GStar 2007 convention, Dragonica combines fun, humor, extensive content and innovative gameplay.

Urp I think I’m gonna throw up…

Revolutionaries, let me confide a little something to you: I am not good when it comes to realistic depictions of blood. I have an incredibly weak stomach for gore and viscera, and the sight of breaking bones leaves me ready to kneel before the porcelain god. I avoid horror films as if they are going to give me SARS [aka Sudden Asian Racist Syndrome ~Ed.]. I handle twenty beers better than I do one video of a breaking bone. Keep this in mind as I explain my experience with Blitz: The League II.

[image1]I started by sitting down with a good friend and playing a quick competitive multiplayer match. We both chose teams that had maxed stats, because there’s about four of them just sitting around in the roster. This immediately begs the question of why they bother having stats in the first place (a matter which I will expound upon later) – either way, we were both taking teams full of football titans to the field.

Before actually letting us play the game, we were treated to a five-minute video explaining the basics while showing large amounts of internal bleeding, ripping tendons, and breaking bones. Yep, it was less than 10 minutes into the game, and I already wanted to hurl. These renders were amazingly good, disturbingly so. I’m sure on closer inspection I could find details that would tip me off that this wasn’t real, that a strand of muscle wasn't really ripping into shreds, that blood wasn't really splurting out of the ruptured capillaries into the empty space of the muscle mass, but I don’t know if I could have kept my carpet clean trying that.

Backdrop

Long long ago, there was no difference between the heaven and human world… Every corner was filled with happiness until one day something unexpected happened. The archangel Lucifer fell in love with a girl; however this girl was already in love with another angel.
